A United Services Institute (USI)
is an association of Officers, ex-Officers and interested Civilians formed
as “a group concerned with the military technique and the technical and
economic stability of our nation. We want Canada to grow as a nation, to
fulfill its responsibility with the world community, because only from a
national stable economic base and sound political policies can it discharge
its role at home and abroad”.
RAUSI originated in Calgary in 1920
and is one of 27 USIs that makes up Federation of Military and United
Services Institute of Canada (FMUSIC). Membership is open to serving
military Officers, ex-military personnel and friends of the military in
southern Alberta.
The RAUSI provides financial and
moral support to Alberta’s Regular Reserve and Cadet Forces and sponsor a
bursary for advanced education for students with a military background.
Through the RAUSI Foundation, RAUSI seeks to promote and encourage public
awareness and support for Canada’s Military establishment and makes grants
for the maintenance of armouries, military museums, military heritage sites
and qualifying organizations in Alberta.
The Institute has sought to
maintain and nurture close bonds between the civilian and military populace
in Calgary, and provide a focal point for such diverse groups as the POW
Association, the Air Crew Association and the Royal Military College Club of
Canada.
The role RAUSI has to play in the
City of Calgary has never been more important. The departure f all the
regular force military, together with the initiative to reorganize and
restructure the Reserves, levies a major challenge to RAUSI and to raise
public awareness of the presence of Calgary’s Military Garrison and to
stress their importance as a part of the fabric of the city.
