Canada's new Arctic defence policy: Is it too little and too late?

1 May 2024 - Edmonton Journal

The Canadian government’s much anticipated defence policy update, spurred by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, finally acknowledges the growing threats in the Far North that many have long known and feared.

“The most urgent and important task we face is asserting Canada’s sovereignty in the Arctic and northern regions, where the changing physical and geopolitical landscapes have created new threats and vulnerabilities to Canada and Canadians,” notes the new policy, Our North, Strong and Free, released April 8.

This is a reversal from the Arctic and Northern Policy Framework, which, in 2019, claimed “Canada’s sovereignty over the region is longstanding, well-established and based on historic title, and founded in part on the presence of Inuit and First Nations since time immemorial.”

Pulling Punches: Iran's Failed Offensive Against Israel

15 April 2024 - RUSI

During the early hours of 14 April, Iran launched its biggest direct military offensive since the Iran–Iraq war, and its very first against the state of Israel. The strike was an almost complete military failure: Israel and its allies prevented more than 99% of all attacks, consisting of Shahed drones, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles. The launch was detected immediately, and was predicted with Israeli and allied forces on high alert who had approximately two hours of response time before the drones reached Israeli airspace. The strike was then taken apart as it moved across the Middle East by members of the US-led Middle East Air Defence Alliance, which includes jets from the RAF, the Jordanian Air Forces, the US Air Force and many more. Most of the surviving munitions were then intercepted by Israel’s Iron Dome defence system. At least five missiles did penetrate through these defences and struck targets in and around an air base in the Negev Desert. These five hits resulted in no casualties and caused next to no reported damage.

About RAUSI

Royal Alberta United Services Institute (RAUSI)

RAUSI is a Canadian-based forum for global civilians, humanitarian, military and international police communities to present original thoughts on trending issues, in their formative stages, as they relate to global security and defence.

Formed in 1920 as a think tank, RAUSI later evolved into a service organization for veterans in the decades following the World Wars. In this new era, RAUSI has evolved back into a think tank, publishing original content, curating extant articles, and sponsoring speaker’s symposia which amplify cross-disciplined models of 21st century security and defence.
